I wanted to share my floater only vitrectomy experience (2/28/14) with Dr. Wong in the hopes it could benefit others who are on this site looking for help. Dr. Wong’s web site is a great resource for patients seeking relief, and I’m glad to now be able to contribute to it and help it grow with my own story.
Some background: I had suffered from severe floaters in my right eye for about 1.5 years prior to my surgery with Dr. Wong. Like many of you, I was afraid of undergoing surgery and tried to just “live with it”. Again, like many of you, I found this simply wasn’t an option. The floaters impacted my life in many ways: I couldn’t enjoy myself outside anymore, working on the CPU, which was and still is such an important part of my livelihood, and something I enjoy, became very difficult. It was difficult to look around and drive, as I had an oil slick of dark dense floaters flying into my central vision every time I panned my eyes around the road. Long story short, it was a debilitating nightmare every day of my life.
I finally started doing some research on FOV and quickly found Dr. Wong and his online web site. Shortly after, I started communicating with him via e-mail, and joined in on his webinars which were a great forum to learn more about the procedure and ask questions of a highly experienced surgeon – a pretty unique experience all around – I had never had this type of interaction with a doctor before and it was refreshing to be able to reach out to Dr. Wong with my many questions and always get a prompt reply back.
I continued to stay in touch with Dr. Wong, and pondered the procedure for quite some time. Eventually I decided it was time to take it a step further and go in for a consult. Even knowing that I wouldn’t do the procedure until a future date, I still flew from Connecticut to Virginia for a one day trip to meet Dr. Wong and discuss the surgery. I found him highly qualified, sympathetic, and eager to spend as much time with me as I needed. I think his exact words were “I’ve got all day for you”. And indeed he did: I probably spent close to 2.5 hours talking with him and learning as much as I could. I left his office that day feeling relieved and more hopeful than I had in a long time – and most importantly, I felt very comfortable with the idea of undergoing surgery and knew I had the right surgeon for the job.
I ended up doing the procedure about 3 months later, and the results have been spectacular. Dr. Wong made me feel relaxed with everything through the whole process – before, during, and after the surgery and the whole experience was very smooth. Things are so much better for me now, as the surgery has helped fix what was a gaping hole in my quality of life and my vision in my right eye has never been better.
I would highly recommend Dr. Wong to any floater sufferer who is considering FOV. I believe that for a procedure such as this, choice of surgeon is essential and you want to go to someone who is highly experienced (I think he has done roughly 20,000 vitrectomies!), as well as someone who is sympathetic to the condition. Again, I had so much faith in Dr. Wong’s skills that I took two separate trips out to VA to see him. And it was worth every penny!
I hope reading my experience helps others out there that are on Dr. Wong’s web site and looking for info. If you have any questions for me, please feel free to ask; I’d be happy to answer them.
